The Congo

AT THE PRINTER! This is the tale of how the war-ravaged Congo never stood a chance at forming its own democracy or nationalizing wealth produced within its borders. The Simple History Series is an ongoing set of digestible bits and stories told the way they are often not taught in school. Wikipedia has NOTHING on this zine!

Hawaii (1778-1959): From Western Discovery to Statehood

Hawaii (1778-1959): From Western Discovery to Statehood

AT THE PRINTER! The title may sound depressing, but such is the story of occupied Hawaii. This is another Simple History Series title that is coming out in the month of October!

Sweatshirts! NEW ONES!

Last year we gave the idea of sweatshirts a shot, and it totally worked! This year we doubled up the designs, so now there are FOUR separate designs - Nicole Georges, Keith Rosson, Matt Gauck, and Sarah Oleksyk! American Apparel, sliding scale, and, best of all, REALLY WARM!

The Spanish Civil War

OUT NOW! From the simple history series, this zine presents a well-rounded and succinct account of the turbulence in late 30’s Spain. Complete with illustrations and a logical account of the complications throughout the civil war, this is an excellent zine for understanding history often poorly presented in high school.

Rad Dad Book!

OUT NOW! The long running zine of same name is going big time with a book! Contributions from all kinds of people working in the radical scene, this is a great book for punk parents, radicals with kids, or activists with progeny!

Zinester's Guide to Portland—NEW EDITION!

COMING IN NOVEMBER! Fifth edition—that's right, a brand new cover, wholly updated and fact-checked, a ZGPDX that's with the times! You'll see these new covers go up on the website once these come in, so keep your feelers up!

Hurt: Notes on Torture in a Modern Democracy

WINTER 2012! Hurt is Portland activist Kristian Williams' collection of articles and interviews on the history, psychology, and current state of torture in democratic societies.

Railroad Semantics #1

WINTER 2012! So many new titles to pine for! Railroad Semantics is an impressive series about trainhopping and train culture. Check out issues #2 through #4 while you wait for this one to come out.

White Elephants

SPRING 2012! White elephants are the odd, old, and discarded things that end up at yard sales and flea markets—and Katie Haegele loves them all. This is a great little book about estranged items, the lives they lead, and where they intersect with real life.

Homesweet Homegrown

SPRING 2012! Subtitled "How to grow, make, and store food, no matter where you live", this book is like gardening 2.0 - and just the kind of thing to prep you for next year, when everything falls apart because of the Mayan calendar! Prepare for Quetzalcoatl with properly stored pickles and applesauce!

What we, as individuals, have been up to!

As bizarre as it sounds, the individuals that make up the Microcosm collective DO manage to do things outside of Microcosm - and here's proof:

Adam Gnade spent a good part of September on tour, playing songs in support of his connected books/records project. He has finished a new 66-page mini-novel that will be out in December. He recommends Ivan Turgenev, the Remedy Diner in Raleigh, NC, and the bands Under White Pines, Dark Hills, and Damon Moon and the Whispering Drifters.

Matt Gauck gave the best zine reading of his life to a totally packed house with his amazing friend Deanna Michaelson, and is now so excited about zines it's positively ODIFEROUS. His bike touring zine, Next Stop Adventure #5 is nearing the halfway point, and might actually be done at some point before the Mayan meltdown in 2012. He is also studying astral projection for fun and activist purposes, and no, he's not joking.

Rio is hard at work on his Revenge of Print zine and is living off his rice cooker (rice cooker bread = someday!). He discovered the 1976 tabletop role-playing game based off Watership Down, Bunnies & Burrows, and plans to play it while listening to British post-hardcore band based off Watership Down, Fall of Efrafa.

Joe was on tour for the month of September with Joshua Ploeg and Elly Blue talking about bicycle economics, activism, and culture. When he's not doing that he's editing Aftermass, his new documentary about the evolution of cycling in Portland over the last forty years and how it has impacted the present. He missed his cat.

Jessie has been so busy ordering zines, answering emails, and packing those lovely orders that she didn't even have time to write this.
